Welcome to Leon's recumbent folder page. I want to make a
recumbent folding bicycle which is easy to fold, but still is a real
recumbent. In April '99 I made a first draft and sent it to a DIY article in the Dutch HPV magazine 'HPV Nieuws'. Bauke Muntz made a beautiful drawing of
it, see above. After that, I went to play with Moray for Windows to make a 3D drawing of my design. It is a very nice application! It is however not
possible to make a real construction drawing, but a 3D view using a virtual camera is a very easy task.
Points of departure for the design:
Suspension, but in such a way that it takes care for the folding mechanism as well, as with the Brompton and the Birdy
Front wheel drive with a torsioned chain. Other front-wheel recumbent designs show that that is a practical solution
The main suspension axle will be in a slight angle. In this way, the front and rear wheel will be positioned side by side. The folded vehicle
must be able to ride, too.
Cantilever (monostay) suspended rear wheel, the back chain stay exists of one thick aluminum tube
Items, still to be sorted out:
The bike will be foldable, a comfortable seat is big too. The seat must be foldable too, but how?
Where do I find short pieces of aluminum tube without having to buy a whole meter
