I recently received a J2ME enabled Phone, a Nokia 6310i. This was my chance to experiment with the Java 2 Micro Edition. What fun!

I installed the J2ME Wireless Toolkit from Sun, that works very well. It is very easy to deploy and test your application on various devices. Standard emulators are included within the application, others can be added. Playing around with Java 2 Micro Edition I created a few applications, of wich one of them can be very useful. If you'd like to install it and play around with it, be welcome!

This application is created using the MIDP 1.0 Specification, so every Java enabled phone should be able to run it.

When you watch a tennis match on television, the umpire on the chair has a kind of organizer to record the score. Well, your Java-enabled phone can do that for you. I've tried to put the tennis rules in this application and it really works. Might be handy at the next tournament at your club.

Download the Tennis application here and install it on your phone or other J2ME enabled device, please refer to the documentation of your phone to install the application. On my Nokia you will need the Nokia Applicatin Installer to install the application using Infrared Communication between your PC and the phone.

Usage of the Tennis application

After you have installed the appication the best way to learn to work with it is to play around with it. The mapping of the kays can be different on your phone. The following image shows the usage of the different keys. Hover with your mouse above the key and an explanation of the key appears.

Add one game in the first set for Player G Add one game in the second set for Player G Add one game in the third set for Player G Subtract one game in the first set for Player G Subtract one game in the second set for Player G Subtract one game in the third set for Player G Add one game in the first set for Player H Add one game in the second set for Player H Add one game in the third set for Player H Subtract one game in the first set for Player H Subtract one game in the second set for Player H Subtract one game in the third set for Player H Player G receives a point Player H receives a point Does nothing [pick up phone] Does nothing [hang up phone] Select options (About Tennis.../Save game/Change server/Exit Correction: go back one point Indicates the player that serves Indicates the match time

Short explanation

We assume two players (or two doubles teams): a Guest player and a Home player. Use the Up and Down key to give a point to the Guest player (up) or the Home player(down). An asterix '*' appears behind the player who will be serving. When the other player serves, choose Options, Change Server. The asterix will then move to the other player.

When the match has begun, the match time will appear at the bottom of the screen. When a mistake has been made, a correction can be achieved by pressing the back key, the situation of the previous point will be restored then.

Incoming calls or other interruptions will not destroy the score. Everytime the application is interrupted, the current state will be stored. Even when the application has been terminated by the user (by pressing Options, Exit) the current state will be stored. To start a new game, select "New Game" in the options menu.
